Job Summary:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a sworn law enforcement officer who works in collaboration with Burgin Independent School District to provide a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for all students and staff. The SRO fulfills a multi-faceted role as law enforcement officer, educator, and mentor, ensuring positive relationships between students, staff, families, and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Law Enforcement & Safety

Enforce federal, state, and local laws on school property.

Deter, investigate, and respond to criminal activity on campus.

Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of school safety plans, emergency drills, and crisis response procedures.

Provide immediate response to emergencies, including medical incidents, threats, or violence.
Education & Prevention

Deliver age-appropriate presentations to students on topics such as law enforcement, drug/alcohol prevention, internet safety, bullying, and conflict resolution.

Partner with school staff to develop preventative strategies that reduce incidents of crime, bullying, and unsafe behavior.
Mentorship & Relationship-Building

Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students, building trusting relationships to promote safety and respect.

Work collaboratively with school counselors, administrators, and teachers to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Encourage open communication with students, staff, and families to foster a safe and welcoming school climate.
Collaboration & Communication

Maintain close communication with district leadership regarding safety concerns and incidents.

Act as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies.

Provide regular updates to school leadership on safety trends and recommendations.
Qualifications:

Certified law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Minimum of three (3) years of law enforcement experience preferred.

Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with youth, educators, and community members.

Completion of specialized School Resource Officer training (or willingness to complete upon hire).
Working Conditions:
-
Full-time, school-year position with potential summer assignments.
-
Assigned primarily to Burgin Independent School District campus (K–12, single building).

Exposure to indoor and outdoor environments, with potential for high-stress situations requiring immediate action.
Performance Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent/Principal in consultation with the law enforcement agency partner (if applicable), based on effectiveness in maintaining safety, supporting student growth, and fostering positive relationships.
Salary and Benefits:

Salary determined through agreement between Burgin Independent School District and the partnering law enforcement agency, in alignment with district budget and local funding.

Benefits in accordance with district policy and/or law enforcement agency contract.
