                                         BURGIN INDEPENDENT JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Custodian/Maintenance

Salary: See Board approved Salary Schedule

Reports to: Superintendent

Approved by: Burgin Independent Board of Education 

SUMMARY: Serves as a custodian and maintenance employee for the District

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Custodian
    • Clean assigned areas per floor plan
    • Clean, mop and dust all hallways and classrooms in your area
    • Pick-up paper and trash in bathrooms and hallways, clean up spills such as vomit and other mistakes which come from children or other adults.
    • Vacuum floors, shampoo carpets, wash walls, fix lockers, clean rooms once after school programs are finished, wash windows, wash off graffiti, wash bathroom stalls.
    • Set up for special events and meetings.
    • Wash off desks for students and teachers, move classroom desks and tables from one part of the school to another, which sometimes is either up or down stairs.
    • Pick-up paper and trash around school and grounds.
    • Deep clean all school bathrooms in your assigned area (soap filled, toilet tissue, etc.)
    • Complete stripping/waxing of floors when school is not in session
    • Secure and lock all classrooms and outside doors at the end of the school day  
    • Complete all trainings outlined for this position
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Maintenance
    • Completes all assigned work orders and follows expected timelines to complete work orders
    • Uses school breaks in the calendar to complete administration's list of minor projects
    • Remove snow/ice for sidewalks and door entrances
    • Unloading the occasional delivery
    • Repairs minor breakdowns of maintenance in assigned school
    • Change light bulbs
    • Assumes responsibility for proper use of tools assigned and security of the tools within the building
    • Assumes responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others regarding the assigned job
    • Responsible for overall appearance of school
    • Complete all trainings outlined for this position
    • Other duties as assigned
  • QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory.   • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: GED or High school diploma, previous work experience
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to interact positively with school and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
